Hi there! 👋
I’m Jamie, a DC-based UX Designer who cares about making a positive impact through thoughtful, functional, and beautiful design.
“The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.”
— Charles Eames
I recently came across this definition of a designer and it has stuck with me ever since. A designer is not simply someone who creates things or solves problems for users, but someone who truly has their best interests at heart. And this is exactly why I love Capital One.
I remember the very first time I saw a Capital One cafe. I was walking across Georgetown in DC and saw the Capital One cafe sign while it was being constructed. And immediately I felt this excitement, warmth, and a personal connection with a bank I had never even interacted with. It was a similar feeling to that moment when, as a child, you’re intimidated and quietly waiting for your parents to finish their business at a bank, but one friendly bank teller walks up to you with a smile and hands you a lollipop - excitement, warmth, and a personal connection. Just from these Capital One cafes, I can tell that Capital One is an organization who plays the role of a great host for their guests, willing to challenge the status quo to best serve the needs of their customers.
A bit about me
I believe that high-impact experiences stem from having a genuine heart for the people you are designing for.
I’ve had experiences designing websites for small businesses, and currently, I help support people in the healthcare industry by helping the resolve application problems that they face in their day-to-day. I also recently graduated from a UX design program where I’ve gained the skills to to solve problems, end-to-end, with a human-centered approach.
I’m ready to bring my experience to join Capital One on the mission to make a positive impact by bringing humanity, ingenuity and simplicity to banking - and simply being a great host for your customers.
My highlights
Creative
Ever since I can remember, I’ve grew up wanting to be some kind of artist. I grew up loving to create things from drawing to building websites, painting, playing the piano, doing makeup, and so many other things. Having worked at a freelance web design company and also as a creative team lead for my church, I have enjoyed every opportunity to create beautiful and functional designs. I’m currently working on redesigning for my church [stay tuned for a link once launched].
Empathy
Connecting with people and really being able to understand them is something that I’m passionate about. I enjoy the process of synthesizing research to uncover insights and making informed decisions in order to design a meaningful, impactful solution. At my current position, empathy is key part of being able to thoroughly understand problems that users are facing and providing the best support and resolution for them. I’ve also worked on a conceptual project for Spotify to integrate a new social feature to extend their social capabilities and help users connect with each other on a deeper level. This required me to dive deeply into the unique experiences people have had with music and how they connect with other people to uncover what they truly need.
Flexible
I’m familiar with all parts of the design process from research to uncovering insights, brainstorming, strategy, information architecture, interaction design, wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, and presenting my work. For my Homely project, I worked on designing a furniture app end-to-end to help users find the perfect furniture for their homes using an AR feature.
Teamwork
I’ve had many opportunities to collaborate with team members, other departments, and clients to achieve a unified goal. On the day-to-day I work closely with my own team to solve problems, and frequently collaborate with developers to resolve more technical issues. I also have experience leading clients meetings and working closely with them to make ensure that client goals are being met. While I’m a strong independent worker, I am just as effective working within a team and enjoy collaboration.
Growth
I enjoy challenges that help me learn and grow professionally, and as a human-being. I believe that there isn’t an end to learning (there’s so much out there!), and I have a hunger to discover those things that I don’t know quite yet.
Why me?
So aside from my experience and skills, what makes me different? Why me?
One of the most important things for me is to use the skills and talents that I have to make a meaningful impact on others. As a designer, for me, this means pouring as much love as I can into what I create and also the people that use them. I’ve seen how Capital One puts heart into the work that they do for their customers through social responsibility and the unique perspective that it brings to the banking industry (I’m a big fan of the Capital One cafes) - and that’s the kind of place that I want to be part of. As a UX Designer, I look forward to the opportunity of joining your team on this mission to reimagine banking through human-centered design.
If you think I might be a good fit, feel free to reach out! I would love to connect and discuss the possibility of working together.
Fun Facts
In addition to designing, I enjoy:
Food & Desserts 🍩I’m always on the lookout for the next best food, dessert, and coffee spots in the DMV area. I love taking and editing photos of places I visit and food that I eat which I document on my instagram.
Games 🎮 I love playing games in my downtime. Currently playing: Genshin Impact, Call of Duty, League of Legends, Stardew Valley, and Overwatch. I also enjoy playing board games!
Makeup 💄Using the face as a canvas for makeup is a hobby of mine. Similar to designing, I enjoy using makeup to express beauty in different ways - experimenting with different types of products and color palettes.
Piano 🎹I currently play the keyboard as part of my local church’s worship band and have been playing since middle school. Serving the Church is a big part of my life and who I am.
